Impressed!

The book list for the Financial Planner training course I'm taking had another book specified that was pretty well trashed on [...] so I was pleasantly surprised to find this one as an alternative on the instructor's reading list and although it was too new to have any reviews written I tried it anyway. I've only gotten through the first chapter but am already very impressed with the clarity, information format and most importantly the inclusion of real world examples. The way the examples are presented give you the feel of mentoring with a financial planner while he/she works and provide immediately implementable knowledge.

New version is available but nobody should buy it!

This is the worst college textbook I've ever seen. It actually has two sets of page numbers (large numbers at the top of the page and smaller ones in the margin in the middle) and the Subject Index in the back only applies to the small ones. In this new 2013 version, the information, graphs, and charts are seriously outdated (this book does not appear to have been updated since the previous version in 2006) and the descriptions of life insurance include no descriptions of indexed universal life insurance (IUL), nor is there any mention of fixed/indexed annuities (FIA) with the lifetime income benefit rider (LIBR). These products have been widely available for some years now. In an era where writers are valued for their ability to make complicated matters sound easy, this writer consistently makes simple matters sound complicated! This text should not be used for any class.

Easy to understand

I've read three chapters so far and I have to say I really am enjoying the clarity and simplicity of the way it is written. The information is presented in such a way that I look forward to learning the material. It is very easy to understand.

The only thing that confuses me are the stories included between the advisor/planner and the clients (to which I presume). One paragraph is written in first person, while the one following it may be written in third, and then switches back to first person again. I couldn't understand what these stories were about- if they were the author's own personal recounts of business with clients, or if these were hypothetical situations.

Read the Book, Visit the Site

While visiting our son in Georgia, we decided to take a trip to Andersonville. My husband and I thought it would be a quick trip and were totally wrapped up in the events that occurred here. We spent hours touring the ground and museum and watching a video. The events that occurred here are part of American history. Not only would I recommend the book, but also a day's side trip to this town.

Excellent account of one of warfare' s greatest atrocities

A good although at times uneven read, Andersonville filled in many blanks in my knowledge of Civil War prisons. It's quite a dark subject but Kantor did a good job of spinning the story and holding my interest. Perhaps an epilogue describing what happened to the main characters after the war would have helped to tie things up at the end.

The best book I've ever read

This won't be a long review.
This is a story about the infamous Andersonville prison of Civil War fame, into which tens of thousands of Northerners were inhumanely confined under obscene conditions.
MacKinley Kantor introduces and keeps faithful track of scores of characters, and does each and every one of them full justice. Whether he is illuminating the background of a simple soldier or conveying the daily goings-on of the locals, the way he maintains the unity of this massive narrative is a marvel.
The main character, and the moral center of the story, is Ira Claffey, a Southern farmer, slave-owner and philosopher. Though in this day and age most people would argue that a slave-owner cannot be moral, Kantor suggests otherwise. The beauty of Ira's character is that it is capable of accepting and adapting to the great social unheaval the Civil War brought to the South, and we are shown in other characters, most notably his wife Veronica, what happens to those who cannot accept and adapt.
Most striking of all is the humanity to be found inside and outside the four walls of the cesspool of disease and despair that Andersonville stockade quickly became. Some passages are almost too heartbreaking to read, and others lift the spirits like a tonic. It may seem contradictory, but there is great beauty in this book about evil, suffering, and death.
I can't recommend this book highly enough, or do it any sort of justice in writing a few paragraphs about it. You must read it.

When friends hook up, it can be tough on people in their inner circle, especially when one discovers feelings that were never there before.

After catching her boyfriend shagging some random slut, Sasha needs a time out from life. She goes on a 30th birthday vacay with her BFF's Kate and Justin, hoping to heal her heartbreak. Instead, she's forced to watch and hear the new couple going at it at all hours of the day and night! She's also forced to acknowledge that the two of them turn her the hell on. Sasha doesn't know what to do about these new feelings, especially since both of them seem to be uncharacteristically flirty with her. Can Sasha move past the awkwardness and come to terms with the new dynamic or will the three of them break off their friendship…or…is it possible…could a third option present itself?

These days it's tough to find single standalone books (aka, not in a series, no cliffhanger trilogy, no prequel novella) but that's exactly what novella SECRET YEARNING is, and it's GOOD. Like really good. And, just like porn flicks, it's even rarer to find some hot lesbian action combined with decent writing, both of which Ms. Tova does a kick ass job at in this friends to lovers story. Even if girl on girl (on guy) isn't your thing, you'll be enamored by Kate's innocent yet forceful seduction of Sasha, and turned on by Justin's inability to keep his hands to himself. Sasha's concern and frustration and envy are all palpable; you could just feel her turmoil and emotions jumping off the pages. Also jumping off the pages was the chemistry between the three of them…absolutely delicious! I'm not sure how Ms. Tova managed to pack so much story into such a short read, but I'm really glad she did! I only wish I didn't have to say goodbye to the sexy triad so soon!

Bottom Line: Smokin' hot read with girl on girl and MFF action PLUS a nice little emotional punch I didn't anticipate. This is one author I'll look out for in the future, especially since this is her first erotic romance book...she's a natural!

Old Friends and New Love

Sasha's in the dumps because another dismal love affair has gone belly up. Watching her best friends Kate and Justin, now a couple, get their sexy on doesn't help her depressed mood. They're all spending the weekend together at a country house and in spending time with them, Sasha realizes her feelings for both of them go beyond friendship. But will she destroy her relationship with them if they learn the truth?

Secret Yearning is a fun, sexy read. The menage sub-genre is overrun with the 2 male, one female combo, so it's a nice change to read an FFM romance. (Note: the women interact sexually with each other as well as with the hero.) Kate is sweet and sexy and Justin is a hunky, to-die-for hero. There's some drama when headstrong Sasha fears she's betrayed her best friends and is tempted to make an even bigger mistake. But there's sweetness in the way the characters care about each other, even if they take some missteps on their way to love.

In 1965, a 28 year-old pastor named Robert Short turned a popular slide show he'd been presenting while working his way through seminary into a book called The Gospel According to Peanuts using Schulz's characters to explain the Christian faith. He explained that Lucy, in her headstrong impulsiveness, often represents original sin. In the Hound of Heaven chapter, Short shows how Schulz used Snoopy to stand for Christ or ideal Christians. A small Presbyterian publishing house (John Knox) published it in hopes of inspiring some Sunday-school teachers to think outside the box, and, behold, their wish was fulfilled. Over 10 million copies were sold. Thirty-five years later the publisher has issued an anniversary edition....Short demonstrates a broad and deep grasp of Scripture, theology, and popular culture, all without any of the personal narrative that dominate today's religious bestsellers. After reading Short's Gospel, I know less about him than I do about my insurance agent. His only narrative is the gospel: original sin, the wages of sin are death, sin makes us aware of our need for redemption, salvation is entirely a work of grace motivated by divine love. --From Beliefnet

Short is perhaps best known for his first book, The Gospel according to Peanuts, which was lauded by The New York Times Book Review as "a 'perilous experiment' that comes off and earned the "admiration and respect of Peanuts creator Charles M. Schulz. An ordained Presbyterian minister, he regularly traveled and preached throughout the country, presenting programs in Christian faith and the arts at churches and colleges. Sound theology AND entertaining

In contrast to an earlier reviewer, I see sound theology here. Mr. Short never says that everyone will be saved regardless of their actions or beliefs; he clearly expresses the true Gospel - that one must be saved through faith in Jesus Christ alone. With that out of the way, this is both a solid statement of the Good News of atonement through Jesus' sacrifice but also an entertaining and novel way to illustrate its principles. While some may be put off by the expressions "Good grief!" "Auuuggghhh!" and the like, they represent our reactions to life and show that we all struggle daily. Even the Apostle Paul said that he "die(d) daily" in his struggle with the sin of daily living. The late Charles Schulz (whether intentionally or not) reflects through his Peanuts gang this struggle and the joys that can be experienced if we pursue them, in our case through a true faith in Jesus Christ! God bless Charles Schulz!

Robert Short's The Gospel According To Peanuts is a timeless classic of religious insight based on the enduring legacy of the late Charles Shultz, creator of the Peanuts newspaper comic strip. Short examines the religious content of Schultz's beloved little universe of Charlie Brown, Lucy, Linus, Snoopy, and the rest to reveal, from a Christian perspective, the prophetic and theologic meanings manifested by these charming and universally known cartoon characters that became pop culture icons the whole world over. The Gospel According To Peanuts is highly recommended reading all Schultz fans and anyone who has ever noted the enduring wisdom embedded and embraced by the little folks who inhabited his daily and Sunday cartoon stories.

A convincing argument for the use of modern-day parables

The Gospel According to Peanuts is a truly fascinating little book filled with insight, wisdom, and the type of joy that Christians should naturally espouse. Robert L. Short certainly does not argue that every single Peanuts cartoon carries a theological message, but he offers up an amazing selection of comic strips that do in fact encapsulate a number of important Christian beliefs. He begins the book with a justification for Christians embracing the arts as a means of spreading the Gospel to those around them. The fact that Charles Schulz himself was a Christian is, in a sense, immaterial; as Short argues, Christians should embrace all manner of things which will allow them to connect with others in a subtle and less holier-than-thou manner. You can't go around beating people over the head with God and get results, no matter how good your intentions. Engage them in the arts or some other object of mutual interest, and you open up innumerable outlets for Christian witnessing. For those who would scoff at the notion of linking Christianity with comedy, Short reminds us that, to the world, Christianity is itself rather comical. It is a wonderful argument that offers up much food for thought.
In the same vein as the parables of Jesus, Short makes use of dozens of Peanuts comic strips to shed light on a clear and understandable theology, finding many illustrative parallels in the lives of the Peanuts gang. Charlie Brown, in a very real sense, represents Everyman, a jolly good fellow who is always looking for something to improve a life that is, by and large, rather miserable - he never wins, just as mankind, on its own, never wins. Charlie Brown is also prone to moments of great anxiety, a fear of nothingness and emptiness. Short's most memorable comparisons, though, are to be found in the other central characters of Peanuts. Lucy's psychiatric business represents the rather modern fad of humans looking toward psychiatry to solve their problems and to reveal to them why they are so unhappy. Then there is Linus, who tends to try to run away from his problems and finds comfort only in his blanket. In Short's hands, the Great Pumpkin becomes a symbol of popular religious sentiment - Linus says, at one point, that it doesn't really matter what you believe as long as you are sincere. Of course, the Great Pumpkin never appears. Even more interesting is Linus' attitude toward Santa Claus, for, in Short's analysis, it represents the attitude of many professed Christians toward God. As Linus expects to be rewarded by Santa for his good behavior, some Christians seem to believe that by obeying God's commandments and doing good works, God owes them a reward. You can't pretend to be good and get to heaven, Short reminds us. Eternal life is a gift from God that no man can possibly earn on his own merits.
Short also expounds upon the dual nature of God's love, illustrating his argument with comic strips featuring, for example, the positive and negative qualities of rain. He concludes by offering a brilliant analysis of the words uttered so often by Charlie Brown: "Goof grief." Because you must become lost before you can be found and seek before you can find, grief can ultimately be a good thing, thanks solely to the death and resurrection of Jesus.
I was amazed at the insights into Christianity this book delivered. Non-Christians, even the Peanuts fans amongst them, may not enjoy this book because of its tenaciously theological design and purpose, but the truths that can be found in the comic strips of Charles Schulz can very effectively serve as the individual's exposure to and understanding of Christian faith. This is a remarkable book, and its importance goes far beyond its pages. Short shows how modern art and entertainment can help redefine and improve the effectiveness of the church in spreading the message of the Gospel to all men, women, and children.

I teach a Men's ministry and I plan to use this book as a teaching tool. I want the men of my church to understand what a man should really look like. Not what the world expects, but what God expects. It's that good.

A modern hero story

Tozer NEVER fails to get to the very heart! If you have never read A.W.Tozer's work, may I suggest that you start here. And when you have been suitable impacted by the power of this wonderful book, I recommend "The Pursuit of God", "God's Pursuit of Man" and let the Holy Spirit minister truth to you like few modern day teachers do. This man may have died in 1963, but his writing is SO for today! Thank You, God for the heart of this man, and the servant-willingness to speak the truth to the hearts of Your people. Truly transforming.

Gr. 2-3, younger for reading aloud. In 1997, a young red-tailed hawk was hit by a poacher's arrow, survived for some time, was captured, cared for, and released in the Midwest. Schaefer, whose fourth-graders followed the news stories about the hawk, has turned this event into a picture book for older readers. By taking the point of view of the hawk, she has anthropomorphized the raptor in ways that sometimes seem stilted. Children may be mesmerized, though, by the hawk's efforts to fly, and to capture prey and feed, with an arrow piercing its thigh and tail. The capture and healing of the bird are handled gently, and the story ends with its release to the wild. Swiatkowska's rich acrylics have beautiful soft edges and fine detail, demonstrating the hawk in many guises as it struggles to do what a raptor's gotta do despite the protruding arrow. About the Author

LOLA M. SCHAEFER is the author of several acclaimed books for children, including This Is the Sunflower and This Is the Rain. In 1997, she and her fourth-grade students followed the Michigan and Indiana news releases of a red-tailed hawk injured by a poacher's arrow. Impassioned by the bird's will to survive, Ms. Schaefer was determined to share his amazing story with children. She lives with her family in Garrett, Indiana.

GABI SWIATKOWSKA is the illustrator of My Name Is Yoon and Hannah's Bookmobile Christmas, which Booklist praised as "beautiful" and "atmospheric." A freelance artist who studied painting at the Liceum of Art in Bielsko, Poland, and a former preschool teacher, Ms. Swiatkowska lives with her family in Brooklyn, New York.

Beautiful book -- touching true story

This is a beautiful book. The true story of this magnificent bird's struggle to survive will touch the hearts of children and adults who are nature lovers. Great artwork!

Touching story with a good lesson

My son and I enjoyed this book tremendously. He has read it on his own quite a few times but the effect is so different when we read it together. The story is touching and at one point, I could see my son winced in pain (the part when the hawk was shot). He felt really sorry for it and was so delighted to know that it is alive and well again. Great story, good lessons within.

One of our all-time favorites

I picked up this book at at used bookstore a few years ago, when my son was four or five and my daughter was a toddler. Despite the sad beginning of the story (a hawk struggles to survive with an arrow stuck in its body), it captured my son's heart and became one of his very favorite books. My daughter now loves it, as well. We re-read it a few times a year, and whenever I pull it off the shelf they both cheer, "ARROWHAWK!!" A thought/discussion-provoking story based on true events - and a terrific choice for children who are bird/animal lovers who enjoy non-fiction. Also recommended: Pale Male: Citizen Hawk of New York City.
