If you are experiencing burnout, the last thing you need is to slog through this book. Its main flaw is that the authors fail to recognize and respect the limited control that a single worker has over his or her workplace. For example, in the chapter on respect, the authors suggest that one confront a coworker who has made an offensive joke to educate him or her regarding his or her insensitivity. If that doesn`t work, then tell the supervisor. If that doesn`t work' then file a formal complaint. If these suggestions actually worked, then I`d say you work in a pretty enlightened work place and don`t need this book. More likely than not, however, these suggestions don`t fit your work place, and you are $10 poorer for having bought this book. I would have preferred suggestions that are more within the realm of my control and my abilities than to depend on other people or the company to become more responsive to the problems I am experiencing. Lastly, the quiz that you are supposed to take to categorize the nature of your burnout did not translate well to the Kindle format.

This is great book! I read a couple of others and this one really stood out. I found that the focus was more on the issues that we all are subjected to and the things you can do to prevent get burned-out. It really soldified the reality that we find ourselves in. Further, understanding that I'm not the only one that feels this way was a great relief.

This is a wonderful book! First of all, it's very well written and is easy to follow. Secondly, it does an amazing job of revealing how dangerous burnout is and what it can do to us in our work lives. Make your New Year's resolution a smart one and read this book. I speak on stopping burnout to diverse groups--many in the assisted living industry where burnout is alive and well--and the solid research that this book provides helps groups understand that burnout can't be ignored without paying a high price.

Lancaster was the former manager of the UK's Green Chemistry Network, and his book, Green chemistry: an introductory text, is a genuine introduction to the subject for undergraduate and postgraduate students, based as it is on clean chemical technology modules taught at the University of York. Much of the book should be understood by a general readership.

Starting from the 12 principles of green chemistry expounded by Paul Anastas in 1998, Lancaster, in a series of well written chapters, discusses such topics as waste minimisation, catalysis, solvents, environmental performance, renewable resources and alternative energy sources.

Lancaster's book is not just about green chemistry in the laboratory, but has several chapters on the industrial scene - developing greener technologies and processes as illustrated in a series of industrial case studies.'

About the Author
Mike Lancaster has more than 20 years experience in the chemical industry, mainly with BP in a variety of R&D and Business Management roles. He established the Green Chemistry Network and a Masters course in Clean Technology at the University of York. He has spent the last 6 years with the Chemical Industries Association and has been heavily involved in developing and promoting the sustainable development agenda.

Having just read 35 Elvis books...

I just spent a month reading 35 books on Elvis for yet another book. Also, i interviewed 10 people I've previously met who knew him inside Graceland. I selected reads by those who knew him, and only a couple of other titles. You will find that most of the general biographies draw from & cite the personal autobiographies & biographies of E written by the Memphis Mafia, the musicians, lovers, friends, and an assortment of Graceland workers. In my opinion, the most useful books on Elvis are by Jerry Schilling, Billy Stanley, Dr. Nichopoulos, Larry Gellar, and the title 'Elvis Aron Presley' by Lacker, Smith & Fike. Also, this book being reviewed 'Elvis what Happened' gives an insiders' look but it is so pitifully arranged and slanted as to leave the intelligent reader wondering if the author had any scruples. Do read this book, but don't finish and even think you know Elvis. Read it in combination w/ some other by those who knew him. This particular title was written in a rash of anger, from the first to last page.

SO MUCH THEY DID NOT KNOW....

It is interesting to read this book, because compared to the books out now about
Elvis - there was so much they did not even know!! Elvis must be rolling over in his grave at how much there is out there about him now. Elvis could have never kept the things he was doing quiet in today's world. I do hope they had his best interest at heart when they wrote this...I can see how they might feel it would shock him into straightening up...however, I wonder if it may not have caused his death...I still believe he committed suicide...that book came out just that week he died, he was just a day away from going on tour...it all seems too coincidental.
But, this book is a complete waste of time compared to the books out today. I wanted it as a "collector's item".

The True? Story of Elvis

When this book came out soon before Elvis died, it had created an uproar. I didn't purchase or read it at all back then; I'd only heard about what was in it and felt it must have been sour grapes on the parts of those who wrote it. But in the years since Elvis' death, there have been many books written and other testaments to Elvis' personality and the effect that his drug abuse had on his mind/personality and the toll that it had taken on his body. So, this book is no longer the sensation that it had been back in the day. Still...there were some things about Elvis that I realized for the first time not only from reading this book, but also from having read other books about Elvis' life.

Elvis came to stardom the year that I was born, yet his impact had been felt for generations. I suppose the Colonel had done a great job in protecting that image. I believe, if even subliminally, I - like so many other women of that generation - had put Elvis on a pedestal that most men could never attain. He was simply the ideal. Initially, it came as a shock that Elvis cheated on his wife and that he took drugs...but there was yet another side to Elvis that I didn't fully realize until I'd read this book... Elvis was a child - a man-child, if you will, who never grew up because he didn't have to. Everyone else did everything for him; when he stepped out of line, someone(s) was there to "smooth things over;" he never had to personally answer for anything; he displayed terrible tantrums when things didn't go his way; he was often unthinkingly cruel which, I think, may have had a lot to do with his drug addiction.

With that said, it's difficult not to feel sympathy for him. I'm sure many of his fans and maybe even his loved ones thought over the years that "if only we had done that" or "if only the Colonel would have allowed him to do this..." He was, after all, human; no different and no better than the rest of us. The moral of the story is: pedestals aren't made for human beings.

While it's true that for me, personally, Elvis will never be on the pedestal that he one was, his image will live on and that image will remain on the pedestal.

Most helpful in expected and unexpected ways, this book is a must read for ALL business people.

I’ve long enjoyed the impact of a story to drive a position, but have never had a model to fully develop a quality story. This genuinely reads like someone that has put in the 10,000 hours plus of bringing the concept into the field, and subsequently perfected the model. The overall model itself makes story development seamless. And this was something that I and my business needed urgently.

This book has helped me both personally and professionally. But I want to speak to the area of greatest impact. As a small business owner, this book is a game changer for two critical problems we’ve faced.

First, we are a company with 40+ years of history. We’ve seen a lot of growth and change in our own industry and the industries we serve. And we struggle with telling the stories of our experiences. We have no repository of any, and when something in alignment comes up in a sales meeting, we have missed opportunities.

At my company, we have a great story to tell overall about who we are, what we do, and why. I've spent the past year struggling with getting something on paper. I didn’t have to read far to get there (page 30), and in ten minutes, we have an elevator story to tell anyone, from the POTUS to my 9-year old niece what we do. Running through our experiences over the years, we have a list of somewhere around 10 different scenarios we face when meeting with a prospect. And we have more than 10 great stories we can have ready at the helm.

Then the surprising, expected, and welcome outcome is solving problem #2. Our second problem is with employee engagement. Among the many wins from this book, this was the unexpected. My partners and I came to realize a year or so ago that one of our challenges of engagement is our need to articulate the magnitude that our employees have on solving problems for our clients. But it is not as simple as saying, “Hey Will, you solved a fifty-thousand-dollar problem today for Widget Co!” For the client, the impact is apparent, but employees in all companies often do not understand the impact of their efforts. But armed with a story, and all the tools imparted by Smith, we now have a powerful way to express our gratitude to our employees.

This book gets right to action. I enjoy that Smith executes the argument for the concept itself flawlessly, and then moves on. I find it frustrating when an author spends the bulk of their content reminding us of the validity of their original claim(s). The examples offered and the execution about each component drive buy-in without you having to revisit the original claim.

This is a book should be on the shelf of every business person that has something worth saying and something worth buying.

Already Using This To Build My Stories!

We know how critical stories are in connecting and engaging our customers. But if you’re like me, I struggle with developing and telling stories that are supportive of what I’m trying to accomplish. It’s so much more natural to go to the data, or the facts. But these don’t capture our customer’s imaginations.

Paul’s written a brilliant guide to help each of us leverage the power of story telling. First, he discusses the importance of aligning the story with where the customer is in their buying process/where we are in the selling process. The most appropriate stories in introducing ourselves to prospects are very different than those we use in presenting our solutions, closing, and even after we’ve gotten the order. After that foundation, he goes in to great detail in how to create powerful sales stories.

I tried his approach for a major presentation at for a group of top sales executives. The speech is coming up in a few weeks, but in preparing the speech and practicing it on a few people, incorporating stories has changed the impact and effectiveness of what I communicate. Paul’s guide will be the cornerstone to all my future speeches, and to most of my prospecting calls.

If you struggle with developing and leveraging high impact stories in your sales process, Paul’s book is a great guide to help you learn how to construct your own.

A Book for Salespeople and Leaders

When I first saw the title I wondered why I would need to read it. As soon as the author Paul Smith shared the story of the experiment selling items on eBay I was hooked. The author shared the results of a test selling items on eBay and how having a story in the description allowed them to sell at a higher price. After reading that I immediately began thinking about situations where using a story would help me be more convincing.

The beauty of the book is how it is also an instructional book to help you learn how to craft and use stories to convey your position. After reading the book I would highly recommend it not just for sales people but anyone who in a position where you need to communicate with others.
