Grains of Truth

It's so hard to know what happened in John Lennon's final five years. The chief eyewitness (John) is dead and Yoko, his second in command, is notoriously taciturn. Philip Norman offers a brief sketch of these years in his 2008 bio, but that sketch is complicated because 1.) he doesn't reveal his sources* and 2.) his somewhat mendacious Shout! does not inspire confidence. Robert Rosen and Frederic Seaman have both produced accounts of Lennon's final years and months, but one questions their credibility since they definitely had axes--personal, financial--to grind. And salaciousness sells.

Tarot reader John Green's book is complicated because the majority of the text consists of dialogue amongst Green, Ono, and Lennon. Green himself admits in the preface that most of the conversations are not verbatim transcriptions, but reconstructions. It's difficult to know why he took this stylistic route, when a plain retelling punctuated with brief dialogue would have sufficed. Unfortunately, this choice of construction calls the truth of his account into question.

I am inclined to believe that there are grains of truth here in the broad events. We already know, for instance, about the Lennons' harebrained cow farm schemes, Yoko's preoccupation with numerology, the Japan visits, and John's Bermuda trip. Some of the minor details can even be corroborated elsewhere, such as Lennon's cat Alice falling to her death from one of the Dakota's windows. As for the rest, it's impossible to ascertain, especially since Green appears to have disappeared from the record shortly after the book's publication. I've read that he's since died, which makes it even harder to verify some of the more esoteric information here.

Green claims in the preface to have omitted certain confidences out of respect for the late Lennon, but there's certainly enough here to shock and titillate. In one passage, a shaken Ono comes to her card-reader and tells him that Lennon has savagely kicked toddler Sean for crying during the family's nightly meditation. The pair's marriage comes across as supremely dysfunctional, rooted in Ono's hoodoo and Lennon's alternating spineless capitulation, humiliation, and cruelty instead of healthy communication. Both depend on Green for advice on how to deal with the other, rather than, you know, doing the logical thing and just opening up to their spouse. For his part, Green doesn't seem buy into his card-reading as much as his clients, instead guiding them with common sense advice drawn from personal experience. In Green's account, both Lennon and Ono are superstitious, dissatisfied, petty, manipulative, egotistic, and materialistic, although Green is never directly judgmental in discussing these qualities. For example, Ono believes her musical prowess exceeds Lennon's, even in rock 'n' roll, while Lennon resents Ono's semi-successful foray into the business world and attempts to sabotage it in order to bring her attention back to him. We learn that the myth of John's househusbandry was supposedly constructed to cover up for bouts of crippling depression and his self-described loss of his muse. Yet throughout this drama, Ono and Lennon espouse genuine love for each other, although to the trained eye it looks more like classic codependency.

The book is a fast and intriguing read, but at the end it raises more questions than it answers. Was Green telling the truth as he understood and experienced it? I'm still not sure.

An Essential Read for those Interested in John and Yoko

Dakota Days is another of the books on John and Yoko that is considered forbidden by the people who deify the Lennons. If you go into certain venues and attempt to discuss the book, the sheep with act all agitated -- because they think they're supposed to. What the Beatles-worshippers will not give you is a rational basis for their hatred of this book. Their dislike of it, after all, isn't reasonable to begin with. It's just that Dakota Days addresses areas of John's and Yoko's lives -- Yoko's outrageous addiction to superstition, Lennon's depression in the mid-to-late 1970s, etc. -- that Lennon worshippers don't want anyone to know about.

In fact, this is a very good and extremely readable book which fully exposes Yoko's craziness, some of the problems that plagued the Lennons' marriage, and the creative impotence that tormented Lennon in the late 1970s. It's is very telling that the best response Ono could muster to the book was the trotting out of her loathesome spokesperson Elliot Mintz, who duly spouted his usual nonsense. I recommend Dakota Days to those who are genuinely intersted in John and Yoko's lives in the 1975 - 1980 period.

About the Author
Norman Tyler, FAICP, is faculty and former director of the Urban and Regional Planning program at Eastern Michigan University. He has also taught at the University of Michigan and Penn State University. He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Planners and a registered architect. He has served on the board of the Michigan Association of Planning, the Michigan Historic Preservation Network, the local chapter of the American Institute of Architects, and a founding member of the Ann Arbor Preservation Alliance.

Ted J. Ligibel, PhD, is director of Eastern Michigan University’s historic preservation programs and an advisor emeritus to the National Trust for Historic Preservation and the Michigan Historic Preservation Network. He currently serves as chair of the National Council for Preservation Education.

Ilene R. Tyler, FAIA, FAPT, LEED AP is an architect with special expertise in historic preservation technology. As Director of Preservation in the Ann Arbor office of Quinn Evans Architects from 1986 to 2014, Ms. Tyler managed the restoration of numerous landmark public buildings and produced many reports documenting historic structures and sites. Since 1998, she has been an adjunct lecturer in the Historic Preservation Program at Eastern Michigan University.

A wonderful textbook for everyone in Historic Preservation

Anyone who seeks knowledge from a text book expects a structured course of solid detail. But sometimes the organization of a course can begin as a meandering stream only to become an untamable river. Given how broad historic preservation can be, thankfully the 2009 edition of Historic Preservation by Norman Tyler flows so simply in presentation and is a pleasure to swim through.

Mr. Tyler's introduction to historic preservation is a quick review of the earliest motivations to preserve. Presenting the classically conflicted ideas of John Ruskin and Viollet le Duc prepares the reader to digest some of the more nonchalant approaches to preservation. Once surveyed, Tyler quickly turns to equipping us with all the content and contextual knowledge to recognize the depths of the built environment. A chronological explanation of the major architectural styles along with simple line illustrations helps to focus the reader's interest in a concise way. This historic architectural reference is integrated directly into the ethical basis of why and the legal backbone of how preservation legislation has evolved. Thus, the important emphasis on an asset's significance and integrity is well examined and driven home

Once past the shallows of basic knowledge Mr. Tyler circles back to examine the intricate sees of historic individual and district designations. This expands into the reasoning behind municipal land use law and it's application. It is now time to load up on the tools and techniques of modern preservation. Simplifying the different approaches in rehabilitation, restoration conservation and reconstruction leads seamlessly to all of the fun parts of research and documentation of assets. The author's detail on basic building systems is masterful. Throughout these sections is a careful balance struck between such diverse areas as describing a Historic Structure Reports and addressing life / safety issues.

But without an economically secure future how can a structure survive the rapids of change? Mr. Tyler's answer begins with a fresh look at Donovan Rypkema's landmark report on the benefits of preservation. Realistic considerations of a structure's financial viability lead into the surprisingly clear waters of easements, tax considerations, and financial analysis. Even the pro forma spread sheet example invites a try.

Since a reader has come this far, the next step is advocacy, fundraising and assistance with local government and municipal planning integration. Preservation planning through Downtown Management, Master Plan review and zoning are explained in a general way so to invite a local conception. This 2009 edition also reflects an up to date, smart discussion on sustainability, greenability and active heritage tourism.

Great Introduction to Preservation

This book provides a very solid overview of the historic preservation movement in American. It has chapters on architectural styles, the foundation and history of preservation, the legal process of listing sites, the Register of Historic Sites, the differences between historic districts, landmarks, and areas, and preservation economics and planning. The book covers the long term issues typically associated with preserving historic buildings and it also highlights the uphill battle that has been fought by preservationists through the years. It is full of sketches and images of important historic sites and to show differences in architectural styles. The complex topics of restoration, renovation, and conservation are explained in detail. A great introduction to an important topic.

About the Author
Born in Havertown Pennsylvania, Tim Donaghy loved the game of basketball ever since he could remember. He received his love for the game from his father Gerry Donaghy, who had officiated at high school and collegiate level games for over thirty years. Since he lived so close to Philadelphia, he naturally became a 76ers fan. Some of his favorite players were Doug Collins and Mike Dunleavy. Donaghy attended Cardinal O'Hara High School in Springfield, Pennsylvania where he played competitively during his four years spent there. Following high school, Donaghy graduated from Villanova University with a liberal arts degree in 1989. Although Donaghy had a degree after his graduation, he became unsatisfied with the direction in which his career was headed. One night while sitting at the kitchen table with his parents, his mother suggested that he look into a career in the NBA. It was all the motivation that he needed, and began to pursue his new found dream job. Later as Tim Donaghy perfected his skills as a referee through training camps, he was noticed by the NBA supervisor of officials Darell Garretson. This eventually led to Tim Donaghys start in the CBA, the NBAs official minor league. He officiated for three years in the CBA. Before his fourth year Donaghy was called to officiate in the NBA. From 1994 to 2007 Tim Donaghy worked for the NBA, officiating in 772 regular-season games and 20 playoff games. Donaghy was a participant in the NBA's Read to Achieve program, for which he participated in an event at the Universal Charter school during the 2002 NBA Finals. His uniform number was 21

confirmed a lot of what I already suspected

As a huge fan of NBA basketball, many things in this book merely confirmed what I already knew. The officiating in the NBA is often biased and the outcome of the games is quite often controlled by the officials. They have favorite players and favorite coaches and don't mind helping them win if they can do it without blatantly making calls in their favor. Anybody that has followed the NBA saw the favoritism for the Miami Heat in 2012 and 2013. I think Tim Donaghy got caught up in something and didn't know how to get out. Once he was caught, he did the right thing by confessing to his part and learning a lesson from his mistakes. I wish, as he states at the end of the book, there was a way to control the bias by referees. While the gamblers, Vegas and organized crime love crooked referees, most fans just want a fairly called game. Nothing is more frustrating than to watch a team play so hard to have a win snatched from them by a referee. It happens way too much.

Great read for an NBA fan.

great book, read it cover to cover. I loved reading about the game they played where the first ref to call a foul in a game has to buy dinner. LOL. I loved the break down of notable refs, and their tendencies, who they loved, who they hated. As an NBA fan, this is a must read because we see these refs every game, and we've always made note of their reputations, but this makes it all make sense.

Confirmation of what I already believed

Donaghy comes straight out and tells readers how things really are inside the world of the NBA. There is no way to verify with 100% certainty everything that he says. Nor is their any way to prove that elements of the story were not left out. In spite of that, Donaghy spills enough inside information to expose the corruption that has affected the NBA for at least two decades now.

For years I had suspected that referees had screwed over the Kings in the 2002 Western Conference Finals against the Lakers. I also thought the same thing about the 2004 Mavericks-Heat Finals where the Mavericks got totally robbed by the referees. Lo and behold, here is a referee who knew exactly what was going and is confirming what many of us already thought. I like David Stern even less now than I did before which is saying a lot.

After reading this book I can barely even take the current playoffs seriously. One of the books more dubious characters, Joey Crawford, was at it again just a week ago in the Heat and Celtics series. After Kevin Garnett got called for a bogus shooting foul Doc Rivers calmly asked Crawford if "Kevin" was not allowed to stand his ground in the paint. Crawford responded by angrily throwing him out of the game! Seems like a pretty innocent question to most anyone else. It sounds to me like the league wants to see Lebron in the finals after his controversial season to jack up ratings.

If you love the NBA and are going to be disappointed to find out how corrupt it is then you might want to avoid this book. If you are tired of the league and its antics then you will love every page.

In my opinion, Donaghy came clean and broke the news the way it really is, the good the bad and the ugly. The result is a really fantastic book that I would recommend to most any basketball fan or casual observer.

Read It and Live It!

This is an amazing book. I purchased the Kindle version for myself and the book for my husband. He enjoyed reading it (and he hates reading) and we both not only got a lot out of it, we re-read portions of it. We both feel the author has a gift in her writing ability to take this topic and make it easy to read, enjoyable and understandable. We both immediately got our vision boards up and running. The principles are not just biblical-based, they are also standard practices of almost all wealthy successful, people (we've been reading a lot of success books lately). The take the author has on it - the vision board - is a brilliant idea and very easy to implement. She gives plenty of helpful information, quotes from successful business people and her own story. I believe if you want to change your pathway, patterns and life, and want to succeed, this is a wonderful book to help you on your way.

Very easy to follow and read

Very easy to follow and read. The real life stories are amazing and I love how the scripture supports and guides all the principles in this book! The Word is the authority and it does work in real life. Terri has done a great job in communicating how real life people can change the life they have by allowing our God given purposes to flow and be imagined again. I am going to take 50 people through her book in January as a result of what has been happening in my life this past month by implementing the strategies in her book. Thank you Terri. One day we will meet. Bless you and your dad for all you do.

Excelent introduction to process integration.

The goal of targeting (energy, area, unit, cost, etc.) is to address optimum conceptual design prior to actual design. This book provides an excelent introduction for targeting heat exchanger network design and synthesis. This book also covers extended targeting methodologies to address distillation column, CHP, furnace, batch-process, etc. A very good book for students and industry people.

The fundamentals of process integration for better economics in the chemical process industry are explained in this book. The author has done a very good job in providing detailed examples using the popular methodologies of Pinch Analysis and Mathematical Programming. Highly recommended as a text for students and as a handbook for practicing engineers.

Poorly written

Turner wrote something very insensitive about 9/11 in the second half of the book (something about how it would have "smacked of delicious irony" but for how tragic it was). Further, Turner makes a conclusion about the spread of Islam that ignores a vast array of facts and contradicts other passages in his own book.

If you want to learn about Islam, you should look at a different book. Almost anything, I'm sure, would be better than this one. I second the suggestion in an earlier review that someone interested in learning about Islam is better served by looking at Wikipedia than buying this book.
