Good Choice

There are several Books with this title on sale. They are basically all the same. This one however is the one to buy as it presents the original in a reproduction that is unaltered with all its errors and in a large easy to read print and at a very reasonable price. Take care, the higher priced book has a good presentation and has been edited in an attempt to clarify some contextual and printing errors that exist in the original. That book is not worth the extra cost unless you get it second hand. The other is a smaller print reproduction in standard size paperback.

About the Author

Irismar Reis de Oliveira, MD, PhD, is a professor of psychiatry in the department of neurosciences and mental health at the Federal University of Bahia, Brazil. He is the creator of  trial-based cognitive therapy and has trained therapists in Brazil and other countries in this model. Dr. de Oliveira also maintains a private practice and is the editor of Standard and Innovative Strategies in Cognitive Behavior Therapy

Thomas Schwartz, MD, is a professor in the department of psychiatry at SUNY Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, New York, where he is also director of adult psychiatric clinical services, assistant director for psychiatric medical students, and director of the Depression and Anxiety Disorders Research Program. Dr. Schwartz also maintains a private practice and consults for the Indian Health Service, the Neuroscience Education Institute, pharmaceutical company and associated industries as well. He is the coeditor of Depression: Treatment Strategies and Management, 2nd edition.

Stephen M. Stahl, MD, PhD, is adjunct professor of psychiatry at the University of California San Diego, chairman of the Neuroscience Education Institute and an honorary visiting senior fellow at the University of Cambridge. He is the author of over 400 articles and chapters, more than 1,200 scientific presentations and abstracts, and the author of many books, including the best-selling and award-winning Stahl’s Essential Psychopharmacology, and The Prescriber’s Guide, both now in their fourth editions, and the recently published series of clinical cases, Case Studies: Stahl’s Essential Psychopharmacology.

Morrison is Professor of Early Childhood Education in the Department of Teacher Education and Administration, and a Next Generation Course Redesign Faculty Fellow in the College of Education at the University of North Texas. He teaches courses in early childhood education and teacher education to undergraduate and graduate students. Professor Morrison earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in History from Washington and Jefferson College, a Masters in Elementary Education from California State College of Pennsylvania, and an Ed. D. in Elementary and Early Childhood Education from the University of Pittsburgh. He is an experienced public school teacher and principal and has supervised student teachers. In addition to the University of North Texas, Dr, Morrison has been a professor at Edinboro University Pennsylvania and Florida International University.

 

Dr. Morrison’s accomplishments include a Distinguished Academic Service Award from the Pennsylvania Department of Education, Outstanding Service and Teaching Awards from Florida International University, and the College of Education Faculty Excellence Teaching Award from the University of North Texas. A best-selling author, his other textbooks include Early Childhood Education Today, 12th ed. (also translated into Spanish, Mandarin Chinese, and Malay); Teaching in America, 5th ed.; Education and Development of Infants, Toddlers, and Preschoolers; The World of Child Development; The Contemporary Curriculum; and Parent Involvement in the Home, School, and Community.

 

A popular author, speaker, and presenter, Professor Morrison serves on the editorial boards of Annual Editions: Early Childhood; the International Journal of Early Childhood Education, and is a Senior Contributing Editor for the Public School Montessorian. He contributes his opinions and ideas to a wide-range of publications. The focus of his speaking engagements and presentations include the future of early childhood education, the globalization of early childhood education, the changing roles of teachers, the influence of contemporary educational reforms on education, and the application of best practices to early childhood education. Professor Morrison also lectures, conducts seminars, and gives keynotes addresses on topics of early childhood education in Thailand, Taiwan, China, South Korea, and the Philippines. He and his graduate and undergraduate students present regularly at the Annual Convention of the National Association for the Education of Young Children. Currently, Professor Morrison’s scholarship focuses on course re-design, blended learning, early childhood teacher professional development, early childhood curriculum development, early literacy and reading, faith-based early childhood programs, and cross-cultural/national early childhood programs.

I'll try to be polite, but.....

I'm getting very tired of reading Kindle books that haven't been proofread. The various spelling programs are NOT substitutes for a decent proofreader and/or editor. I saw - without looking for them - 22 instances in just the first 50% of the book in which the wrong word was used in a sentence, e.g. straight for strait, pale for pail, waste for waist, etc., etc. And a bullet is a piece of lead, not led. If the author doesn't have enough pride in his or her own work to proof their own product before it goes out for sale, then I'm simply not going to bother. Why should I be forced to decipher what an author "means," as opposed to what he or she actually wrote - and pay for that privilege.

A book badly in need of an editor. Spell check can't correct for misused words. Very distracting. An eighth grade English teacher would have had a stroke. "There" for "their" numerous times. But a well thought out plot with interesting historical twists.

A Good Read -- Once Past The Word-Processing Errors

Who transcribes these novels for Kindle? Do they have knowledge of homonyms in the English language, or even what a homonym is? Does anyone proof-read Kindle books at any stage? That being said, if and when one gets past the poor word-processing and overdependence on the spell-check function, this installment of Billy Bennett's alternate history series does justice to its predecessors, and leaves one wanting to read the next.

Life on the Lower East Side was bustling. Immigrants from many European countries had come to make a better life for themselves and their families in the United States. But the wages they earned were so low that they could afford only the most basic accommodations—tenements. Unfortunately, there were few laws protecting the residents of tenements, and landlords took advantage of this by allowing the buildings to become cramped and squalid. There was little the tenants could do; their only other choice was the street. Though most immigrants struggled in these buildings, many overcame a difficult start and saw generations after them move on to better apartments, homes, and lives. Raymond Bial reveals the first, challenging step in this process as he leads us on a tour of the sights and sounds of the Lower East Side, guiding us through the dark hallways, staircases, and rooms of the tenements.

As the title suggests, Bial (The Underground Railroad) focuses this illuminating photoessay on the immigrants who settled on Manhattan's Lower East Side from the early 1800s to the 1930s. Rather than finding the fabled land of opportunity, many lived in poverty in rundown tenement flats plagued by poor ventilation, little light and inadequate sanitation. Through period photos as well as his own color shots (many taken at the Lower East Side Tenement Museum), the author describes and depicts typical cramped apartments. These two-room flats sometimes served as both living quarters (for a dozen or more people, often newly arrived relatives or paying boarders) and family "sweatshops." Bial touches on the sobering particulars: with no running water to allow residents to bathe or launder clothes properly, diseases were rampant, and so many babies died that tenements were known as "infant slaughterhouses." Historic photos, including many famous works by the reformer Jacob Riis, make the plight of these families startlingly real. Bial's conclusion, that most immigrants (or their children or grandchildren) eventually prospered, closes the volume on a positive note. Ages 8-12.

Grade 4-8-Spacious layouts, with clearly reproduced black-and-white archival photographs-from Jacob Riis's How the Other Half Lives and the author's beautifully composed, stunning color pictures, many taken at the Lower East Side Tenement Museum-show a community that has been home to thousands of immigrants past and present. The finely written, spare text, with quotes from such people as reformer Riis and author Sydney Taylor, tells of people crammed into small, dark flats, seeking fresh air on fire escapes and rooftops, lacking adequate sanitation, "protected" by rarely enforced housing regulations, and laboring long hours at home or in factory sweatshops. Bial's detailed descriptions transport readers back into the cramped quarters and crowded streets and alleys of late-19th- and early 20th-century New York, but this could be any city with a large immigrant population. The material complements and expands on that in Russell Freedman's Immigrant Kids (Puffin, 1995). Although the lack of chapters or an index makes the book first and foremost a work to browse, read, and savor, its brevity makes it suitable for a classroom read-aloud or report. The pictures are an added bonus for photography students.

*Starred Review* Gr. 5-8. "Half the world doesn't know how the other half lives" goes the old saying. This book about tenement life will certainly be an eye-opener to many young people who are used to their own space where they can live and dream. Although there have been several books about tenement life, including the recent 97 Orchard Street [BKL F 15 2002], in this one, the writing is particularly clear and sharp. Calling upon and quoting the writing of reformer Jacob Riis (and featuring his compelling photographs), Bial explains simply, yet engagingly, what tenement life was like--the dank apartments, people packed against people, the noise and smells from the street that pervaded everything. Effectively weaving in quotations, laws, personal remembrances, and his own astute commentary, he paints a word picture of life at the turn of the last century. Along with Riis' photographs, Bial provides some of his own, taken at the Lower East Side Tenement Museum in New York City. These crisp color photographs bring tenement life even closer: a dresser top with medicine and photographs, a mattress covering a chest and chair--a child's makeshift bed. An excellent example of how books can bring the past to the present. Ilene Cooper

Just scratched the surface

I was hoping for a more in-depth account of the buildings and the people who lived there. Who built them, how were they received by the public? How much did it cost to rent these spaces? This book is sparsely written, with quite a few photos, but it doesn't give a complete understanding of the history, public sentiment, and what happened over time. Do any of the buildings still exist? Do any retain a core of the original design? Etc.
It's an OK quick overview, it only takes 30 minutes or so to read and look at the pictures.
I'm thinking there are better books, I just haven't pursued it yet.

I loved this book. . . . It is very readable. . . . This book is perfect for those who are new to the psalms. Nowell does not presume that the reader knows anything about the psalms. She writes clearly and simply about the psalms to draw one into the topic. Consequently, someone new to lectio divino, the Liturgy of the Hours, and/or spiritual direction will find this book a valuable source. . . . Though this book is perfect for newbies, there are many things that are valuable for people who have been praying with the psalms for years.

About the Author
Irene Nowell, OSB, is a member of the Benedictine community of Mount Saint Scholastica in Athcison, Kansas.  She served on the translation team of the revised Old Testament of the New American Bible and the Committee on Illuminations and Texts for The Saint John's Bible. Among her many titles, she has written several volumes in the New Collegeville Bible Commentary series and is the author of Pleading, Cursing, Praising: Conversing with God Through the Psalms (all published by Liturgical Press).

Psalms as prayer

Benedictine nun, scholar, musician and professor Irene Nowell provides us with a short book but long lectio.
This book is a compelling reason to pray the psalter in common everyday of our lives. Whether we are lay or monastic the psalms carry our first language toward God. It takes years to bring forward such clarity and comprehensiveness in a single 94pp book. My thanks to Sister Irene.

The emotional Psalms

Irene Nowell has put together an excellent, although short study on the Psalms. She reminds us of the many things the Psalms teach us: how to tell our story, how to listen, to cry out to God, and to give praise to God.

She reminds us the Psalms are communal, even if we think we can read them simply by ourselves.. that they "intersect every experience of our lives." (pg.10)

Less than 90 pages, one can easily read through PLEADING, CURSING, PRAISING in one sitting. But the reader may want to slow down and savor the short sections more than once. A worthwhile study and another great resource from Liturgical Press.

Inspired

For me, as a serious (lay) student of the Psalms Sister Irene has been a heroine for quite a few years. This little book is a big thing and will not disappoint anyone, whether competent scholar or curious lay person. I doubt anyone else could have brought so much depth and context to the subject of the Psalms as she has tucked into this little volume. Anyone familiar with her several works on the Old Testament and the Psalms will read between the lines that she was, indeed, called to create this volume. It is a perfect sequel to her many other works. If you want to know why it is a good thing to study and pray the psalms, READ THIS BOOK!
If you are one of her many many students, this book is your cue to thank her again.

Excellent - best book about Napoleon

This is the best book about Napoleon. I bought my hardback with a cream-colored dust jacket many years ago at an antique shop which also sold old books. Emil Ludwig dedicated the book to Elga Ludwig and it is dated ‘Moscia. Summer 1924’. The English translation, which I have, was published by Random House.

Some reviewers here on Amazon do not like Ludwig’s use of the present tense. To me his present tense is what makes the book excellent: it took me right onto the battlefields, and certainly right into Longwood, Napoleon’s house of exile on the island of St. Helena.

Do know though that some of Napoleon’s words have been invented by Ludwig, but as he certainly knew and understood his subject, you can be sure that what he has Napoleon saying makes sense. (He does explain at the back of the book that some of Napoleon’s ‘soliloquies’ (his word) have been invented. As for the rest of the dialogue those he got from memoirs and Napoleonic studies.

Because of the 200th commemoration of the Battle of Waterloo Napoleon is front-page news this year of 2015, so if you wish to read a good book about Napoleon you can download Ludwig’s book from the Gutenberg.Org.

Good read, worthwhile.

This has for years been a standard, especially for those learning about Napoleon for the first time. Trying to extrapolate from facts the actual motives and emotions of the subject is difficult. The author made a credible effort in this regard, and I recommend this easy and entertaining read.

Wonderful read about one of the Titans of history. Written somewhat as an "historical novel" but extremely accurate factually. Highly recommended for biographical reading.
