Two kinds of intellectual activity, both equally instinctive, have played a prominent part in the progress of physical science.

Men like Galileo and Carnot, who possessed this power of perceiving analogies to an extraordinary degree, have by an analogous process built up the doctrine of energy by successive generalisations, cautious as well as bold, from experimental relationships and objective realities.

In the first place they observed, or it would perhaps be better to say that everyone has observed, that not only does an object fall if it be dropped, but that once it has reached the ground it will not rise of itself. About the Author
George Michell trained as an architect in Melbourne, and then obtained a PhD in Indian Archaeology at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, with a dissertation on Early Chalukya temples. Since then he has undertaken numerous documentation and research projects, most recently with John M. Fritz at Hampi. Surendra Kumar studied information technology in Bengaluru, and now works part-time as a photographer, specializing in panoramic topographic views. His work has been spectacularly showcased in Discovering the Deccan (Pictor, Mumbai)

Good introduction to archaeological issues

In contrast to the other reviewer (did he/she read that book?) I strongly recommend "New Light on Hampi". It is an easy readible (at least to any person really interested in south asian art) and reliable introduction to some actual archaeological questions concerning the architecture, sculptural art, hydraulic works and urban layout of Vijayanagara, the famous capital of the late-medieval, last hindu-empire. ("Hampi" is the name of a modern village and pilgimage centre situated in the archaeological zone.) The authors are highly experienced scholars who are trained on archaeology, art history, anthropology and even astrophysics. Among them are the editors, John M. Fritz and George Michell, who since decades are in the front line of the research and fieldwork at Vijayanagara.
The text shows a modern and adequate approach to archaeological questions since not only buildings like temples, palaces, city walls are mentioned but also questions of the everyday life like water supply, irrigation and settlements. The book is not restricted to the archaeological zone proper but reviews Vijayanagara as part of its larger metropolitan area.
The fine pictures by Clare Arni included in this book are as much informing as they invite to visit Vijayanagara.
A short bibliography of english publications since 1980 gives some suggestions for further reading.
Readers looking for some practical guide book better choose other titles about Vijayanagara: That is not the purpose of the reviewed book.

Poorly written book
By Deep Thoughts
A fantastic topic spoilt by poor writing skills. No clue what the author is after. Diagrams in the book are so arcane. It is hard to make any sense of the book unless you have visited Hampi. Photography is also not upto the mark. Although the production quality of the book (quality of paper used, bind etc.) is quite good.

Save your money - buy some other book instead.

Just eleven years after slavery ended, George Pounds traded the tobacco _fields of Danville, Virginia, for the coal mines of Smithfield and Herminie, Pennsylvania. George, a white-skinned mulatto born in 1876 to a sharecropper on a tobacco farm, vowed to have a better life than his parents. Cora Hatchet, a dark-skinned Negro born in 1880 to slaves, vowed to support her siblings, even if it meant a life of drudgery as a domestic servant. _ e two fell in love and married, and their life's journey as an interracial couple, which began in the 19th century, forms the basis for this historic novel based on family history.

Eleven Pounds shares the couple's courage in moving forward even as they were touched by tragedy. George and Cora taught their children and generations following that they could compete with anybody anywhere if they maintained a strong work ethic, commitment to faith and family, and a belief that the color of a man's skin cannot destroy his potential.

Their story also stresses the importance of choosing marriage partners based on character, being brave in the face of adversity, helping others, and trusting in God when darkness descends.

Jewel Thomas drew on oral history from family members, correspondence, newspaper clippings, photographs, census records, and birth, marriage and death certificates in crafting this unforgettable story of one family's determination to not only survive but thrive.

Jewel Thomas began research for this book in 2003, meeting weekly with her source, Lillian Robinson (Aunt Jack), to learn more about the family's history. Jewel, born and raised in Herminie, Pennsylvania, has a master's degree in public policy and management from Carnegie-Mellon University. She believes that every family has a story that is worth telling.

Eleven Pounds was a beautifully written and inspiring account of a family overcoming a tremendous number of hardships in the early 1900's from discrimination to family tragedies. Jewel is very descriptive of the situations that this family has gone through, which makes it easy to empathize and bond with them. There is never a dull moment with the Pounds family, which makes this an especially enjoyable read. You will not regret buying this book, it is truly a wonderful read and contains lessons and laughs for every generation. It is sure to spark your interest in researching your own family history. This true story shows that you never know what you may come across.

My review is somewhat biased for I know most of the people in the story. I had a great nostalgic trip as I read. Jewel described the environment and the people very accurately and with intense feelings. This book was so interesting to me that I read it in less than one day. My grandparents operated a hotel in the building where the later dances were held. I have dear memories of many family events that took place in that building, and I went to school with a number of the people she described as partrons, or musicians, at those dances.

Being interested in the subject of genealogy, I purchased the book with great anticipation. The author has created an interesting and effective weaving of historical fact and plausible fiction. Both the style and subject matter make the book suitable for a wide audience. "Eleven Pounds: It Came to Pass" is an easy read: you won't need an unabridged volume of the Oxford English Dictionary as your tableside reading companion. The story also moves quickly as it gives details of the lives of the family members who constitute the book's eponymous title. A chief attribute of the book is that it has an almost universal appeal. Nearly all ethnic groups and cultures can relate to the themes of adaptibility, identity, acceptance, faith, hard work and perseverance that course through its pages. If the book manages to stir in its readers the same sentiment that stirred in me: a profound sense of appreciation for the lives and sacrifices of family members who came before, then it can be considered an important read that serves a marvelous purpose.

About the Author
Mark Nixon is the Professor in Computer Vision at the University of Southampton UK. His research interests are in image processing and computer vision. His team develops new techniques for static and moving shape extraction which have found application in biometrics and in medical image analysis. His team were early workers in automatic face recognition, later came to pioneer gait recognition and more recently joined the pioneers of ear biometrics. With Tieniu Tan and Rama Chellappa, their book Human ID based on Gait is part of the Springer Series on Biometrics and was published in 2005. He has chaired/ program chaired many conferences (BMVC 98, AVBPA 03, IEEE Face and Gesture FG06, ICPR 04, ICB 09, IEEE BTAS 2010) and given many invited talks. Dr. Nixon is a Fellow IET and a Fellow IAPR.

Unavoidable book for Image Processing Scientists and Lecturers

This is lovely book. As a PhD student, I have been looking for a solution to a problem in image processing for 3 months but when I got this book it solved most of my problems. In fact, my PhD supervisor even liked the book. I strongly , without any forms of reservation, recommend this book for people working in image analysis and pattern recognition. The MATLAB codes in the book are also detailed and explanatory.

I haven't yet read the whole book but I've found so far what I need to give this book a good rating. It has a good balance between the mathematical background and practical implementations. Furthermore, when the theory is not well covered the proper references to the original papers or books are given. I like it!!!

Good as a handbook for image processing and low-level computer vision.

This book covers recent topics, as well as classical ones, in image processing and low-level computer vision. Its coverage is broad and extensive, which is very difficult to achieve in these fast developing research fields.

However, it is better as a handbook for experts, rather than as a textbook for students. Notations are not consistent across chapters or sections, and some of them are quite weird. For example, v, v', v'' denote trajectory, velocity and acceleration in the discussion of curvature. I would prefer p, v, a. Also, a few equations contain errors, which inexperienced students cannot find easily.
