The present edition contains many additional numerical examples and prob­ lems. Greater emphasis is put on the application of thermodynamics to chemical, materials, and metallurgical problems. The SI system has been used through­ out the textbook. In addition, a floppy disk for chemical equilibrium calculations is enclosed inside the back cover. It contains the data for the elements, oxides, halides, sulfides, and other inorganic compounds. The subject material presented in chapters III to XIV formed the basis of a thermodynamics course offered by one of the authors (R.G. Reddy) for the last 14 years at the University of Nevada, Reno. The subject matter in this book is based on a minimum number of laws, axioms, and postulates. This procedure avoids unnecessary repetitions, often encountered in books based on historical sequence of development in thermodynamics. For example, the Clapeyron equation, the van't Hoff equation, and the Nernst distribution law all refer to the Gibbs energy changes of relevant processes, and they need not be presented as radically different relationships.

Thoughts from a Software Engineer

I am a Software Engineer at a start-up in the Bay Area. I purchased this book for the recruiter at my company in hopes of having her better understand engineering candidates.

I did a quick reading of the book to make sure that it would be easy to understand and comprehend for a non-technical person. To my surprise, the book is able to explain complex ideas (e.g., concurrency, interpreted vs compiled,etc...) in a very simple and easy to understand manner. I would highly recommend this book for those who want to better understand the current landscape of web technologies, or for the recruiters out there that don't want to come off as being completely oblivious when communicating with engineering candidates (this is a huge turn-off for engineers in my opinion).

especially good for tech recruiters who need to understand what engineers really do

Easy read. Takes a little over an hour. Great reference book with diagrams to help, and real companies highlighted (to give you an idea of the tech they use). Would be great if Tommy built a table showing windows vs Linux/UNIX technologies (i.e .NET platform people tend to use C#) and defined a few words and acronyms he uses in here (like stack, BSD). Overall, really great value for $5 and the 70 minutes to read it.

Great primer for people that are close to web dev but not developers themselves.

Tommy did a great job in describing web technologies without getting deep into buzzwords. I would reccomend this book to project managers, technical salespeople, product managers, startup founders, and technical recruiters.

If you have some sense of the pieces of the puzzle, this is a pretty short guide. If you're new to the components of development and infrastructure - you'll take plenty of time with this book and can come back to many sections as a guide (down the road).

James C. Kaufman, PhD, is a Professor of Educational Psychology at the Neag School of Education at the University of Connecticut. An internationally recognized leader in the field of creativity, he is the author/ editor of more than 35 books, including the Cambridge Handbook of Creativity (2010) and Teaching for Creativity in the Common Core Classroom (2014), and more than 250 papers. Dr. Kaufman was a cofounding editor of both Psychology of Aesthetics, Creativity, and the Arts and Psychology of Popular Media Culture; he currently edits the
International Journal of Creativity and Problem Solving. He has won the Torrance Award from the National Association for Gifted Children, the Berlyne and Farnsworth Awards from the American Psychological Association (APA), and Mensa's research award. easily, in basic papers

This very expensive book contains very little. There is no systematic treatment of the subject which would lead one pedagogically to understanding. It does not contain any techniques that one cannot find, easily, in basic papers. At some point for example in Chapter 9, it begins to resemble a poorly written survey paper. The chapters proceeding it are only slightly more substantial. The topic is hot and thus the price but you'd be wasting your money if you expect in this book anything more than a disorganized collection of topics easily found in technical papers. It is a list of references which the book cites masquerading as a text book. one of the worst books I have reviewed over the years.

This book provides a comprehensive review of available methods for Geolocation. The authors provide a good framework for those who want to study this field.

The schools covered are Carvaka, Buddhism, Jainism, Sankhya, Yoga, Vaisesika, Nyaya, Purvamimamsa, Pasupata, Sabdabrahma-vivartavada, and Advaita Vedanta. Among the extant philosophical classics, Paramata-bhanga is a unique work. Realizing the importance of the Paramata-bhanga for the comparative study of Indian philosophy, late Dr Chari tried to give a lucid exposition of this treatise in English. About the Author
Hedwig Lewis is an educationist and writer and has served as a lecturer and principal. He received the Rev T. A. Mathias Award for Innovative College Teachers from All India Association for Christian Higher Education (AIACHE), New Delhi, in 1993. He has authored 30 books and his publications are on wide-ranging subjects that fall under several categories: spirituality, prayer, skill-building, biographies, inspirational, history, festive, and e-book. Very good.

As far as introductory economics texts go, Sloman is about as difficult as it gets. Nonetheless, it is very readable, and explains (relatively) difficult concepts in a straight-forward, lucid style. Also, it is an ideal text for those students planning to study economics further because within each chapter it has a 'basic' treatment of the issues at hand, and then follows it with an optional 'intermediate' treatment that builds upon the former one. This is an excellent idea in that it gives students the option of advancing far more quickly and easily than by using a 'standard' textbook approach. Further, the content is 'more intelligent' than in your average text - e.g., its chapter on general equilibrium contains material on Pareto Optimality (often left out of texts), and it has an entire chapter devoted alternative theories of the firm (always left out of texts).
In short, this text will challenge first year university students, but will also reward them with greater insight than will the average introductory textbook.

Excellent Economics Text

I concur with the assessment of Mr. Mariyani-Squire. This is an excellent text. Although quite challenging in places for an introductory text, the author organizes material in such a way that students can cover the basics and then extend/apply them. For students who want to go beyond the basics, the book provides additional material and illustrations. Particularly helpful are: the many sections throughout the book where concepts are listed in summary form; and the definitions of key terms printed at the bottom of each page.
