A Practical Guide for the Blogger

When I became aware of this book I was immediately interested as I've recently started a WordPress blog. While I set up and activated the blog with only the helps from WordPress I was always wondering about what I might be missing.

This book carefully and systematically explains the concepts and methodologies behind creating your own personal blog. It sort of fills in some blanks that might be left by the admittedly thorough and helpful steps provided by WordPress.

The author, Todd Kelsey, Ph.D, is a "professional author, and educator" with experience and a sense of humor. The book has a lighthearted, casual feeling about it that makes it reader friendly. It is divided into three parts; Part 1 Getting Acquainted, Part 2 Learning WordPress, and Part 3 Special Topics. Dr. Kelsey places an emphasis on protection and devotes Chapter 6 to Spam, Spam, Spam, Spam: Understanding Spam and Security for WordPress.

The book is carefully structured for learning and clearly exhibits Dr. Kelsey's skill as a communicator and educator; I recommend it highly for anyone who has or wants to have a blog or website.

Who is the audience for this book? I'm not sure.

As someone who has relied primarily on MS FrontPage to create my own Web sites and online software to create blogs, I had never used WordPress. A number of people suggested that it would be a good idea to use WordPress for a series of upcoming professional and personal client projects.

In an attempt to avoid some of the learn-as-you-go horrors of Web site creation, I opted to research WP using this book. It covers the setup basics (and the thought process involved in several key decisions such as doing it yourself or hiring someone else, using a free or paid service, etc.) plus things that a beginner or Web newbie might not even know about (analytics, ads, SEO).

Having done some research and checked out various WordPress sites (and actually experimented with WP account setup), a lot of the upfront material was pretty repetitive. But it would be very useful for a beginner.

My real interest was learning more about themes and templates and I have to say, this didn't provide much information.

What put me off this book was the overall writing style ("Next on our agenda of fun..."), which was somewhat simplistic in places while lacking clarity in others. In some places, it seemed the author was writing down to an audience (I really disliked the "Conclusion" bits at the end of chapters, which started off with "Dear Readers" and many of which included "Congratulations on ...." Felt totally patronizing. And it's not what you expect or want when you're an adult professional reading this, and not a grade-schooler.) However, in other places, the writer was assuming a level of familiarity that beginners using this book would not have. (How likely is it that the beginners who are the natural targets for this book would know what "activating WP-reCAPTCHA" is?)

It's hard to be creative and clever with tech how-tos. Honestly, I don't think you need to be. Just give us the facts in context in an easy to read and follow manner. This book tries too hard to be clever and it could use some editing (ditch the cutesy familiarity and excessive adjectives and tighten up the copy).

I may have had higher expectations based on buying similar books that were better written (again, opinion). This book is from an educational tech publisher and that could be part of the problem. (I wasn't looking for a course textbook, although I've never seen a textbook with the kinds of stuff included in this book.)

The style of the writing in places made me feel as if this was some sort of attempt at a "cool" textbook for young kids. As an adult professional, the writing just turned me off, which is unfortunate as I think there is valuable information and I give the author credit for including topics that go way beyond the start-up process.

Given the topics and the positioning as "getting started with..." I would have expected a glossary of terms. Alas, no glossary was included.

The problem with a lot of these books is that the people who have the most knowledge about the topic are not necessarily the best at sharing that information with a non-tech audience.

A lot of information

I've just started working with Wordpress and I'm just beginning to "get it." I've used other blogging platforms before and have learned by trial and error. I feel like I have more freedom with the Wordpress platform and this book has helped me move things along a bit faster than trying to figure things out by the trial and error way. Be aware there's a lot of information in this book. Some of it you won't need to read if you have any experience at all with blogging software - like how to post a youtube video or how to post the blog to your facebook page. But there are also sections that are invaluable for anyone developing their own blog or website that involve analytics, dealing with digital images, spam, advertising, plugins, SEO etc. I need a lot of help with learning how to promote, optimize and advertise my site when it launches. You should learn these things before launching. But if you've already launched your site, this book can help you rejigger those things that need rejiggering and give you a fresh face. Technology can be intiidating but if you learn what you need to learn one bit at a time, it's all manageable. Believe me. I did it the hard way. This books helps. A lot.

Comprehensive but a bit difficult to understand sometimes

I dabble in electronics as a hobby so a lot of times I will come across something with which I am unfamiliar. In those instances, a good reference is indispensable. I browsed this dictionary in a store once, and the entries I happened to look up were concise and thorough. However, it didn't seem worth the hundred dollars they were asking in the store (especially since the latest edition is over ten years old) so I picked it up on Amazon for about half that. After using it for a while I have discovered that some of the entries use language that is a bit technical for the hobbyist, but I can usually figure out what it is conveying if I think about it for a while, and perhaps cross-reference the material with another source like the Illustrated Encyclopedic Dictionary of Electronics by John Douglas-Young (which is written very clearly, but is much less comprehensive, with fewer entries, and is over twenty years old). I would actually give this book three and half stars. It's pretty good but not great.

This dictionary is compete, larg and concice. It covers all aspects of electronics and is quite humbling. No one person can know it all.

Great as Always

As always this book is very fun to flip through, and is a great conversation starter when sitting out on a coffee table. I now own all 4 of the years and have yet to be disappointed.

Maybe it is just me, but I do feel like this year's book has more interactive graphics than the previous versions. A handful of the visualizations are much more fun if you go to the website and play with them, but to the author's credit he still makes all of them very informative just via one snapshot.
