At long last! It took me ten years from the first draft to deliver this to you, and I cannot be more grateful for all the eager support.
A sequel is like coming home. That's both good, and terrifying. Yes, everything's familiar. But to keep the story fresh, things have to change. And rarely for the better.  
Writing this, I imagined the torrent of desires, dreams, and frustrations that had built up over 8 years, then acted as if the first line of the book was the breaking of the dam. Everything was released, and it was up to the characters to fend for themselves. It's rough, and exciting, and unpleasant, and joyful - especially when the characters grab hold of their own destiny without any help from me.

The sequel to Master of Verona finally arrives in a entertaining Romeo and Juliet re-boot (in this case, "the very early years")

I had to wait 4 and a half years to finally get my hands on this sequel to one of 2007's best books (The Master of Verona), and the results didn't disappoint.

This book, and its predecessor, undertake the task of presenting the feuding families of Romeo and Juliet in their historical context, namely, Verona under the rule of the legendary Cangrande della Scala. The previous book set up the political savvy of Cangrande and the basis for the fued between the Montagues and the Capulets. Blixt does a fine job of creating the historical environment of Verona at that time, and adds Dante's son and daughter as additional main characters in their own right. The book is also peppered with Shakespearean allusions throughout, from Petruchio of Taming of the Shrew to Shylock from Merchant of Venice.

But the star, and central achievement of this book, is the way it brings alive the character of Mercutio, in this book named Cesco, as a thirteen year old boy. Whenever Mercutio's on the page in this book, it soars with the vitality of that remarkable character and is a true joy to read. We also meet Tybalt as a frustrated teen in love with Lady Capulet (herself but a child), Romeo as a toddler, and Juliet as a newborn. I'm so happy someone of Blixt's skill has taken it upon himself to provide a sort of "Romeo and Juliet" re-boot and let us encounter these characters from their beginnings.

I had a one minor issue with the book, namely that the descriptions of physical character action was often so little as to be nonexistent, leading to many pages of pure dialogue. Countrary to this, descriptions of fights or dynamic chases was superb and enthralling, and Blixt's expertise as a fight choreographer really shows in ease with which he renders such moments vividly.

If you're looking for a fresh and entertaining historical fiction read in 2012, I'd recommend this highly.

So how could you top MASTER OF VERONA, in terms of historical splendor, mystery, fast-moving pace and typically, a masterpiece? Well honestly, David Blixt did it again! I absolutely loved MASTER OF VERONA (my review here )- and as soon as I finished reading it, I immediately began VOICE OF THE FALCONER.

In this equally satisfying novel, Verona is at its prime. The story takes place a few years after Master of Verona, and it follows the life of Cesco, Cangrande's illegitimate son, with Pietro as his guardian. The mystery, intrigue and suspense are de rigueur throughout, but it's once it appears that Cangrande is dead that it gets particularly good. Pietro must get Cesco to be pronounced rightful heir...obstacles, obstacles and more...There is danger everywhere- and to boot- not everyone knows of Cesco's existence!

Great plot, lots of excitement, rich historical detail and a setting that is to die for (pun intended). A great story told by a brilliant author. VOICE OF THE FALCONER throws you into a capitulating series of events that keeps the suspense and momentum going, throughout. It's just one of those thriller type mysteries that just keeps on getting better page after page- and additionally it's rich in history and impeccably written. Most entertaining!

I read "Master of Verona", the first book in the "Star Cross'd" series because it just popped up as a recommendation on my Kindle--and became immediately hooked. Luckily, "Voice of the Falconer" was immediately available, and is, if anything, even better than "MoV" because it builds on the exciting story and further develops the characters. Even if you do not like Shakespeare's most famous lovers (as I don't), this is a complete stand-alone saga that anyone can enjoy without being an expert on Shakespeare. I could not put this book down! The way David Blixt interweaves The Bard's more (and less) familiar characters, historical figures, and the characters of his own rich imagination is fascinating. He is truly a master of historical fiction, and I am so glad I discovered his wonderful universe, full of intrigue, humor, tragedy, hope, and everything else that makes for great literature.

Paul served as a pastor in churches in Northallerton, Shepshed and Hull. They have five children and ten grandchildren.

In Ancient Literacy W. V. Harris provides the first thorough exploration of the levels, types, and functions of literacy in the classical world, from the invention of the Greek alphabet about 800 B.C. down to the fifth century A.D. Investigations of other societies show that literacy ceases to be the accomplishment of a small elite only in specific circumstances. Harris argues that the social and technological conditions of the ancient world were such as to make mass literacy unthinkable. Noting that a society on the verge of mass literacy always possesses an elaborate school system, Harris stresses the limitations of Greek and Roman schooling, pointing out the meagerness of funding for elementary education.

Neither the Greeks nor the Romans came anywhere near to completing the transition to a modern kind of written culture. They relied more heavily on oral communication than has generally been imagined. Harris examines the partial transition to written culture, taking into consideration the economic sphere and everyday life, as well as law, politics, administration, and religion. He has much to say also about the circulation of literary texts throughout classical antiquity.

The limited spread of literacy in the classical world had diverse effects. It gave some stimulus to critical thought and assisted the accumulation of knowledge, and the minority that did learn to read and write was to some extent able to assert itself politically. The written word was also an instrument of power, and its use was indispensable for the construction and maintenance of empires. Most intriguing is the role of writing in the new religious culture of the late Roman Empire, in which it was more and more revered but less and less practiced.

Harris explores these and related themes in this highly original work of social and cultural history. Ancient Literacy is important reading for anyone interested in the classical world, the problem of literacy, or the history of the written word.

Paperback edition: a cheap reprint

The paperback edition is a very cheap reprint of the hardcover edition, probably after a simple digital scan of the original, and apparently hastily made by a print worker or editor without any previous experience in book printing: the pagination differs from any other published book I have ever seen: you will find all even numbered pages on the right side (rather than to the left), while all odd numbered pages - including the title page! - are placed to the left. Certainly not worth $38.

Erudite but biased

This book cites and discusses many interesting sources to support the author's thesis that almost no one in antiquity could read. Unfortunately, Professor Harris isn't fair to other points of view. For instance, in the Second Philippic Cicero says that it was customary for people to sell written programmes of gladiatorial matches at gladiatorial exhibitions. This amazing story clearly suggests a high level of literacy in First Century BC Rome, yet Professor Harris never even alludes to it, presumably because it flies in the face of his claim that almost no one could read. It just shows that this book is not a fair and balanced assessment of ALL the evidence.

About the Author

Stephen F. Davis is Roe R. Cross Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Psychology at Emporia State University in Emporia, Kansas. Currently he is Visiting Distinguished Professor of Psychology at Texas Wesleyan University and Distinguished Guest Professor at Morningside College. In 2002–2003 he was the Knapp Distinguished Professor of Arts and Sciences at the University of San Diego. He received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in psychology from Southern Methodist University and his PhD in experimental psychology from Texas Christian University. In 2007 he was awarded the honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree by Morningside College.  His research, which always includes student assistants, has investigated such diverse topics as academic dishonesty, learning versus grade orientation of students, Type A personality, the Impostor Phenomenon, and the behavioral effects of ingesting toxic metals. He is the author of more than 300 journal articles, 31 books, and more than 900 convention presentations.

Steve’s teaching abilities have drawn acclaim on the national level. He has received the National Distinguished Teaching of Psychology Award from the American Psychological Foundation and the Teaching Excellence Award from Division Two (Society for the Teaching of Psychology) of the American Psychological Association. His professional accomplishments also include serving as president of the Southwestern Psychological Association, the Southern Society for Philosophy and Psychology, and Division Two of the American Psychological Association. He also served as the National President of Psi Chi (The National Honor Society in Psychology). He has been elected as a Fellow of the American Psychological Association, the American Psychological Society, and the American Association of Applied and Preventive Psychology.

 

Joe Palladino is Chair and Professor of Psychology at the University of Southern Indiana in Evansville, Indiana. He received all his academic degrees from Fordham University, including his Ph.D. in general theoretical psychology. His numerous articles and presentations have covered topics such as sleep and dreams, the death penalty, extra-credit opportunities, teaching methods, and techniques to encourage research by undergraduate students.

Joe founded the Mid-America Undergraduate Psychology Research Conference in 1982; it celebrated its 25th anniversary in April 2006. The Mid-America Conference for Teachers of Psychology, which he founded in 1984, became the model for regional teaching conferences. His contribution to the continuing education of teachers was recognized by the Faculty Service Award presented by the National University Continuing Education Association in 1991. In 1990 he received the Teaching Excellence Award from Division Two (Society for the Teaching of Psychology) of the American Psychological Association. He was elected to Fellow status in the American Psychological Association in 1989 and served as the president of Division Two in 1991–1992. He has also served Division Two as a consulting editor and the Methods and Techniques editor of Teaching of Psychology, and as chair of the program committee. In 2000 he received the University of Southern Indiana Alumni Association Faculty Recognition Award. He served as Midwestern Vice President of Psi Chi, The National Honor Society in Psychology (2000–2002). He and Mitch Handelsman of the University of Colorado Denver write the column “On the Light Side” which appears in the Psi Chi newsletter, Eye on Psi Chi. Joe also enjoys speaking to faculty on “The Humor of Teaching; the Teaching of Humor.” In addition, he created a number of the cartoons that accompanied the “On the Light Side” columns; and several of these now appear in this textbook.

 

Dr. Kimberly Christopherson is an early career psychologist at Morningside College in Sioux City, IA.  She began pursuing psychology when she was an undergraduate at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, MN.  There she was inspired by several of her psychology professors to learn more about the experimental investigation of human behavior, primarily in cognition and memory.  In graduate school she studied under Dr. Mark Grabe investigating the influences of educational technology on learning — specifically the use of online study tools.  During her time in graduate school, she also realized  her calling to be a teacher of psychology.  Having been inspired by her professors at St. Thomas and teaching her own courses in graduate school, Kim pursued academic jobs as small liberal art colleges after completing her PhD.  Today, Kim in an accomplished instructor and active in both advising student research and in her own research projects.  She was honored by her colleagues in 2010 with Morningside College’s Sharon Walker Faculty Excellence Award.  In addition to her love of research and teaching, Kim also enjoys gardening, growing her own food, cooking and preserving the food she grows, reading everything from historical biographies to southern vampire mysteries, and traveling around the world with her husband.

Great Condition

I ordered this book as a required text for a college psychology class. My professor is one of the authors so he knew the text well. It is an easy read, but it was also a LONG read. Each chapter is 30-70 pages. The content is interesting but I'll be glad when the class is over.

Great book for those entering the field of Psychology

The content of this book is up-to-date. You'll want to do more research after each chapter. Covers almost every aspect. This book is well worth it!

Difficult read

This book is organized in a complicated fashion. There is great information to read however the lay out is horrible. The chapters go on for far too long making the reader feel as if nothing will be completed on time. There are sub-sections within a chapter that more than deserve an entire chapter dedicated to just that subject. If you have a class using this book....good luck!

this book really adds to the safari experience. once you've seen a lot of animals, and some of the thrill of just seeing them is gone, this book deepens your understanding and increases your appreciation of the animals you're watching. if you do a lot of safaris, a must-have.

It's what my native guide used in Botswana

I just returned from a three-week trip to Botswana and plan to write a book that takes place there. I ordered this book because (a) I saw how good it was while I was there, and (b) mainly because it's what my native guide used in Botswana. I can't imagine a much better endorsement than that.
