Where the Domino Fell recounts the history of American involvement in Vietnam from the end of World War II up to 2010; it clarifies the political aims, military strategy, and social and economic factors that contributed to the participants' actions. Narrated in an accessible and lively style by two distinguished historians, the book explores the legacy of war in the region, and traces step by step how America got involved in the region and pulled deeper into the conflict. This sixth edition has been revised and updated to include a final chapter examining Vietnam through the point of view of the soldiers themselves, and brings the story up to the present day through a look at how the war has been memorialized. There are also additional images and new and improved maps. A final chapter examines Vietnam through the lens of Oliver Stone's films and opens up a discussion of the War in popular culture.

About the Author

James S. Olson is Distinguished Professor of History at Sam Houston State University, and the recipient of the university's Excellence in Teaching Award and Excellence in Research Award. He is the author, co-author, editor, or co-editor of more than 30 books, including The Ethnic Dimension in American History, Fourth Edition (with Heather Olson Beal, Wiley-Blackwell, 2010) and Bathsheba's Breast: Women, Cancer, and History (2002), which won the History of Science Category Award from the Association of American Publishers, and was recognized by the Los Angeles Times as one of the best non-fiction books in America for 2002.

Randy W. Roberts is Distinguished Professor of History at Purdue University. Among other books he is the author of A Team for America: The Army-Navy Game That Rallied a Nation at War (2012), coeditor of Hollywood's America: Twentieth-Century America Through Film, Fourth Edition (with Steven Mintz, Wiley-Blackwell, 2010), and coauthor of A Line in the Sand: The Alamo in Blood and Memory (with James S. Dominoes and

To many of us now, the Domino theory that motivated Eisenhower, Kennedy, and Nixon to send troops to Vietnam seems a bit paranoid. How could a country so small threaten US security? But seen in the context of WWII and its aftermath, it makes some sense. Hitler had expanded, invading and annexing much of Europe, and many blamed the size of WWII on Britain's unwillingness to obstruct him sooner; Neville Chamberlain has become an infamous name. Immediately after the second world war, three things happened which even in retrospect suggested danger to Capitalism and America.: (1) the Russian blockade of Berlin, (2) detonation of a Russian nuclear device, and (3) Nationalist China fell to the Communists .To some, Russian and Chinese Communism threatened the US and it's way of life; when the Communists threatened takeover of Vietnam, and perhaps all of SE Asia, it resembled a series of Dominoes, one falling after another. This excellent book recounts the American adventure in Vietnam. (Richard Merlo, Elkin, NC)

About the Author
Martha J. Groom is an Associate Professor in the Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences program at the University of Washington, Bothell and the Department of Biology, University of Washington, Seattle. She teaches conservation biology, ecology, landscape planning and topical courses on science, policy, and society. She has won several teaching awards. Her research focuses on the influences of fragmentation and landscape context on species persistence. Gary K. Meffe is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Wildlife Ecology and Conservation at the University of Florida. He is senior author of Ecosystem Management: Adaptive, Community-Based Conservation, coauthor of Conserving Biodiversity on Military Lands: A Handbook for Natural Resources Managers, and coeditor of Ecology and Evolution of Livebearing Fishes. Since 1997 he has served as Editor of the international journal Conservation Biology. C. Ronald Carroll is the former Director of the Institute of Ecology at the University of Georgia and currently the Director for Science in the River Basin Science and Policy Center at the University of Georgia. He is the series editor for the newly initiated Southern Environment Series of the UGA Press. He teaches conservation ecology and conducts research on invasive species in the southeastern United States. He is also engaged in a large conservation and sustainable development project in Ecuador known as the Chocó-Andean Corridor Project. The project is located in northwestern Ecuador and embraces two globally significant hotspots of biological diversity, the Chocó and the Western Andean slopes.

An enriching text, the best of the best

I have come across Principles of Conservation Biology, while I was an undergraduate student. I remember wondering these times, whether I have changed or that textbook makes itself read. These days we had to read to get good grades, and we used to read literature to entertain ourselves; until this book. This book is both a textbook and a philospphy, a literature, a travel journal, a life book. It synthesizes and delivers so diverse subjects so nicely, elegantly and fully that, it becomes the book the conservation biology deserves. This book is not only for students or practitioners of nature conservation, but for everybody who wishes to understand our role in nature as human beings. This book gets to you with a detailed enough, realistic and widescope view, written in a way that harmonizes scholar, everyday, and philosophical language. A must read.

Mixed bag

Individual chapters are done well. Case studies and essays are a nice touch and make great reading assignments for students. However, I find the redundancy of information a bit frustrating. To make matters worse, there are many times when the same information (e.g., population dynamics) is presented using different terminology. There is another issue in having to wade through pages of examples in the text to distill out a generalization. It would also be nice for the authors to address some of the more public issues directly with references. For example, in the Global Warming chapter, I would have liked to have "common misconceptions" and then the studies that support the scientific consensus. I think this is a valuable text but the next iteration should aim to cut down on redundancy, standardize terms, and have the major points of each chapter at the beginning of each chapter. Just to make life easier, it would be nice if there was a CD to accompany the text with figures and graphs from the text.

Phenomenal book from a very insightful and gifted author!

This is one of the best books/plays I have ever read. The author has great ability to take a tremendously painful subject, treat it with the respect it deserves, and show how his two vastly different characters can educate each other and learn from each other in many difficult but tender moments. The ribbons of circumstance, personalities, experiences, pain, talent, and, in the end, joy, flow through the story and finally come to parallel placements using Robert Schumann's composition, Dichterliebe, to gently weave through it and eventually pull it all together. Marans has given his two characters a good sense of humor to help cushion the pain. I learn something different each time I read through this book or even parts of it. I am a better, more empathetic person for reading this book and seeing the play.

Deep, believable, moving, amazing, and great!

I've seen the play twice and read the book. What a beauty! I've never seen a play before that took so little time for exposition or that gave us the necessary facts in such a natural way. The characters were interesting and their interaction was fascinating. Anyone who has ever been part of a superb teacher-student combination will adore this play. I felt I'd been waiting for it for years.

But this book's fun and simple art and explanation make it a manual even a math loathing mother could love.

By the way, the other edition on "Look Inside" is nothing like this one--frankly I prefer this one to the old.

A hyrax is frustrated and angry every evening when the sun sets, despite his yelling until he is hoarse, "Don't set!" A determined elephant attempts to climb a tree even though an inner voice discourages him. He almost reaches the top but trips and falls. "I'm a lost cause," he admits to himself as an enormous bump appears on the back of his head. An earthworm and a beetle argue over which of them is angrier. From his suitcase, a lobster shows a mouse all of the different types of anger he has for sale—from mild irritation to jealousy and fury. The mouse decides to purchase the light blue, transparent melancholy instead. A shrew unsuccessfully tries to make his friend squirrel angry. Ant suggests all sorts of ways that toad can get rid of his anger—blow it away, crush it, forget about it, swallow it, hide it, sing it away, laugh it off, or nurse it. And, when the day comes when all traces of anger seem to have disappeared, the animals don't know what to do and the ant "fears the worst." But when a cricket accidentally kicks Rhinoceros's knee, angry words return and "everyone went home promising themselves a good bout of anger that night." This is not the way that typical American picture books have explored anger for children, and much of the subtle humor and emotional truths will be elusive to them, even with adult intervention. A really brilliant book, amazingly illustrated by Marc Boutavant

A really brilliant book, amazingly illustrated by Marc Boutavant, who's always spectacular, but the writing is really beautiful as well. Truly the best book in our kid's library and we put some effort into our kids' book collection. It's sad, and moody, and very much unlike most other kid's books that we have. Both our girls love it, they are very curious about what each animal is feeling in each different story, they think it's funny that a grasshopper can elbow a rhinoceros and annoy him, and they always want us to read all twelve stories at once (the only downfall of this book is not always being up for an hour of reading) but it's easy to jump around and only read a few at a time.

I'm not entirely surprised to see that someone rated this book 1 star as it's a serious departure from most saccharine, reassuring, predictable children's books - which is sadly the majority of what you find at most retailers. If that's your style, this book isn't for you. My father in law is a great guy and he clearly thought this book was crap, so it takes all kinds.

Anyway, I'm buying five more copies for all our friends' kids this Christmas. Only criticism is that like 80% of all kids' books every single animal is a dude, even though gender is irrelevant to the stories. Ho hum, not amazing for our girls, but in all other ways wonderful.

The worst children's book I have ever read

Without a doubt the worst children's book I have ever read. 11 stories that make little sense, and are little more than angry rants, followed by the 12th.. a story where anger goes away and all the characters are gloomy and uncomfortable.. until they are able to show anger again.
The moral of the book seems to be that, if you are not angry there is something wrong and you should be angry. We have read only 4 of the 12 stories before throwing it in the bin. A friend was also gifted this book, he has done the same. I have no idea what the author was thinking, or how this was ever published.

Malcolm Torry is director of the Citizen’s Income Trust, and a major advocate for a universal unconditional citizen income. His earlier book ‘Money for Everyone’ presented a powerful case. This shorter book works less well. It includes many good points, but it’s an artificial idea that there are 101 reasons for a citizen income. This artifice inevitably leads to huge and tiresome repetition, and hence to a dilution of the argument. It also leads to forced brevity, meaning that it’s unclear which of Torry’s points are empirically tested hypotheses, which are compelling arguments, and which are subjective speculation. This weakens claims that citizen income generates increased employment, women participation, new business formation, training, voluntary work, creative endeavour, even house price reduction.

A short succinct structured focussed summary would more effectively communicate the case for citizen income. There are in fact 3 main category reasons for citizen income : social justice (which only makes it as number 90 in Torry’s list), benefit system effectiveness and efficiency (eliminating poverty and unemployment traps and invasive bureaucracy, which is Torry’s forte), and economic necessity (the argument to which Torry gives scant attention, that the divergence of productivity and real wages leads to deficient demand and economic crisis for which citizen income is the unique solution). A presentation of this structured argument would be more communicative and compelling, but this would require more consolidation between the various advocates of citizen income.

Good summary and very helpful

This book is a good summary of genetics but one will need to read another book in conjunction with this one. It is great for quick reference and will suit students well as a study aid, as the authors give a set of key notes at the beginning of each chapter. The authors avoid any discussion of highly advanced topics, but instead emphasize the raw basics. However, they don't leave out some of the more exciting topics, such as population genetics, cloning, gene therapies, and the human genome project. The order of presentation is logical, with the properties of DNA beginning the book, with Mendel's laws explained based on the genetic code. In addition, this reductionist approach to explaining the biology of organisms is one that is most compatible with the requirements of sequence analysis and algorithms in computational biology. As such, this is a good set of notes for mathematicians who are moving into the area of sequence analysis and need a background in genetics.

The book is very usefull if you use it as reference, but it doesn't explain genetics in general in a complete way, and the fact that its pages are black and white is difficult to consider it a text book for a genetics course.. I would recomended to people who study genetics and know their material well to use it as a quick reference..

brief and concise reference

As the title suggests,this is not meant to be a textbook of genetics.The basic purpose of this book is to put across key points and concepts in a simple,concise fashion for easy understanding. This book is most useful if you already have some exposure to genetics through classes or more traditional texts.
The strength of this book lies in its clear,brief and logical presentation of topics with good cross referencing.It would be especially useful to students before examinations when reading through lengthy texts or notes is not practical
